Almost everyone today has a pair of leather gloves in their wardrobe. They tend to emphasize a person’s status, they make women more elegant and make men distinguished. Leather gloves complement every style of clothing, they fit harmoniously into any wardrobe, which makes them versatile, and they never go out of style. If you want your gloves to always stay beautiful and elegant, and not lose their softness, you need to keep up with proper leather gloves care.
Proper care of gloves
You don’t have to go to the dry cleaners’ to keep the leather gloves clean and looking neat, you can perform all the necessary procedures at home. There are several ways of caring for gloves: routine dry and more profound- wet. The first method should be used every day, it does not take much time, in this case, you only have to remove surface dirt and daily dust with a special brush or soft, velvet fabric.
To perform the wet care method on leather gloves, you will need to be careful and patient. Before you start care procedures, you need to find out how the leather is going to react to the chemicals you’re about to use, otherwise, you can ruin the gloves and will not be able to restore them at home.
- The easiest and most popular way to care is washing with baby soap. To do this, slightly wet the gloves in warm water and put them on your hands, so while drying they do not shrink and are not damaged. Then clean them in warm soapy water, as if you were washing your hands. This method helps to remove dirt from the surface without any negative consequences, since baby soap does not dry the leather and does not allow it to crack and shrink.
- The following method is best for gloves made of thin leather; you will need: warm water, a small amount of hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, and laundry detergent, preferably one made for hand washing. The solution is prepared according to the following principle: add 5 parts of peroxide hydrogen and any powdered laundry detergent and 1 part of ammonia to 60 parts of water, then carefully mix all the components. Be sure to observe the proportions and the sequence of cleaning the gloves from dirt, otherwise, you can end up with stains and ghosting, and your gloves will be ruined. Pour the solution over the entire gloves, then clean them with a soft rag, and then dry the gloves, but not near the radiator or under the sun. After this procedure, the gloves will become shiny, and the risk of them shrinking and scuffing is reduced.
- A solution of 10% ammonia will help you get your gloves soft and shiny. Dilute 1 part ammonia in 4 parts of water, mix thoroughly. Apply the resulting solution to a cotton ball, then use it to remove grease stains from the surface. Be sure to change the cotton ball as it becomes dirty. Then wipe with plain water, or water with vinegar (1 teaspoon of vinegar per 1 liter of water).
Preserving the elegant look
Leather gloves need to be taken care of every day, because they are very high maintenance, they are sensitive to strong chemicals, which can leave stains on them, or even discolor dark leather. If the leather shrunk and became stiff, the solution of castor oil can help. Apply some castor oil to a cloth, and perform extremely fast, but at the same time a precise movements to wipe the surface of the gloves. Otherwise, ugly spots can form, which can not be removed at home. After two hours, your gloves will have a shiny, soft and elegant look.
If leather gloves shrunk and became smaller and tight after improper storage or washing, you need to wrap them in a damp, wrung out cloth, and then put them on your hands, so that they can take the shape of your hands. Then let them dry like that, just remember that you should not dry them near the radiator or under direct sunlight.
Low-fat milk is good for cleaning white or beige gloves, which are very sensitive to chemicals. Pour one glass of warm milk and add one teaspoon of ordinary baking soda, which is always at housewives’ hand. Do not forget to mix everything well. Wipe the leather gloves with the resulting solution, and you will watch how they acquire a soft texture and snow-white appearance by the minute.
Take a note
Properly stored leather gloves will always remain soft, they will not shrink or crack. In order for that to happen you need to care for them properly. Leather gloves can be stored in two ways: in a box, or in a cloth bag. If your gloves have lost their softness and shape after improper use or storage, you can apply castor oil.
With proper washing, leather gloves will never shrink and will not lose their softness, so washing should be done in warm soapy water and only by hand. You can add a couple of drops of ordinary glycerin, which will provide shine and softness, then dry the gloves by wrapping them in a wet bath towel.
You don’t have to use dry cleaners to properly care for leather gloves, it is enough to have a list of dirt eliminating products. Remember that before buying a stain remover, you must read the instructions carefully and make sure you know how to use it, otherwise, high concentrations can damage the gloves. You need to care for leather gloves daily, especially in the autumn and spring, when there is a lot of dirt on the street. In the winter, do not dry them near the radiator, otherwise, your gloves can shrink.
